Bespoke tailoring — Cedar Falls, Iowa — est. 2014 House cloths on the rail

True Measure Tailors & cutters
State Street, Suite 2

A cutting table, two thousand swatches, and the stubborn belief that clothes should fit the body you actually have. Bespoke from the chalk up; alterations that respect what the garment was trying to be.

Cover — True Measure
Cover — second fitting, basted

A jacket at the basted stage — stitched to be unstitched, which is where the fit is actually made.

The Work

Photographed at the basted and finished stages — the difference between bought and made is the part you can't see.

The Work – True Measure – photo 1
Hand-basting — lapel roll

The canvas is sewn in by hand so the lapel rolls instead of folding. Eleven thousand stitches nobody will ever see.

Working cuffs — silk twist

Buttonholes worked by hand, eleven minutes each. You can tell from across the room.

“Fit isn’t a measurement. It’s a hundred small decisions about how you stand.”

Overcoat — re-cut storm collar

A twenty-year coat re-cut to a new shoulder. Cheaper than a new coat; better, too.

Closing the front

The last press before collection. If it needs a tug, it goes back on the board.

Navy suiting — house cloth

The bolt we reorder every spring. There's a reason.

The Hands

Two cutters and a finisher. Bespoke starts with Rosa; alterations triage happens at the counter, no appointment.

Rosa Imrie – True Measure

Rosa Imrie

Bespoke — 8 weeks

Head cutter — bespoke, patterns from scratch

Rosa trained under a Savile Row–trained cutter in Chicago and kept the habit of chalking everything twice. Your pattern is drafted to your posture, kept on paper, and amended for as long as you own the suit.

Emil Novak

Re-cuts — booking

Cutter & fitter — re-cuts, structural alterations

Emil rebuilds shoulders, re-cuts vintage, and performs the surgeries other shops decline. If a garment can be saved he'll say how; if it can't, he'll say that too, kindly.

Sun-hee Park – True Measure

Sun-hee Park

Finishing — same week

Finisher — buttonholes, linings, the last 10%

Sun-hee’s hand-finishing is why the jacket feels different when it comes off our rail. Silk-twist buttonholes, pick stitching you’d miss if it were gone, hems that hang like they grew there.

The Workroom

Suite 2, up the stairs — a cutting table under the skylight and an iron that outweighs the dog.

Pressing is half the trade.

The table is maple, the shears are older than either cutter, and the iron room does what no machine can — shape wool with steam and patience. Everything is sewn here, in the room you’re standing in, by the people who measured you.

Cloth comes from mills we visit and a house book two thousand swatches deep. If you bring your own cloth we’ll be honest about whether it deserves the hours — some don’t, and we’d rather lose the job than fight the fabric.

Priced before pinningEvery alteration quoted in writing first — no counter surprises.
Three fittingsBasted, forward, finish. The fit is built, not adjusted.
Patterns keptYour draft stays on file ten years; the next suit starts ahead.
Honest triageIf it isn't worth the work, we'll say so at the counter.
